What Is Known — and What Remains Unanswered — About the Death of James “Buffalo Jim” Barrier

James “Buffalo Jim” Barrier, a longtime Las Vegas mechanic, business owner, and former wrestling and boxing promoter, was found dead in a Motel 6 on Boulder Highway shortly after checking in on the evening before his death. The Clark County Coroner’s Office ruled the cause an apparent heart condition linked to cocaine use, estimating that death occurred soon after his arrival. Witnesses reported that Barrier checked in alone and that no unusual activity was observed near his room. However, accounts also reference a woman known only as “Lisa” who was allegedly present in the room and left after Barrier suffered an apparent seizure. Efforts by Barrier’s family to exhume his body were denied, and they have stated that the condition of his body raised concerns similar to those in the death of Ted Binion, which was initially ruled accidental before later being reclassified as a homicide. These circumstances, combined with Barrier’s long-running business dispute with Frederick “Rick” Rizzolo — a figure later convicted on federal tax charges and released from custody just days before Barrier’s death — have left key questions unresolved regarding the events surrounding his final hours.

Leissia Yvonne Woodruff, known as “Lisa,” has been identified as a central individual connected to the circumstances surrounding James “Buffalo Jim” Barrier’s death. At this time, the matter remains under review by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The hope of the Barrier family is that a full and thorough examination of the facts will bring clarity and accountability.

The family extends sincere gratitude to those who have continued to support their pursuit of answers and transparency, and who remain committed to ensuring the truth is fully examined and brought to light.
